Tennis Tiebreak Rules

Quick answer

A tennis tiebreak is played when a set reaches 6 games all. Points count 1, 2, 3 (not 15, 30, 40). The first player to reach 7 points wins the tiebreak and the set 7–6 — but you must win by 2. Serve switches after the first point, then every 2 points. Players change ends every 6 points.

Example

Here's how that plays out

Let's say you and I are playing a match and the score reaches 6 games all. That means we have reached a stalemate in the set. To decide the winner, we play a tiebreak.

Let's say you win the first point of the tiebreak. That means you lead the score 1 to 0. In a tiebreak, we count points using 1, 2, and 3 instead of the usual 15, 30, and 40. You serve the first point. After that, the serve switches every 2 points.

Let's say the score reaches 6 points all. That means no one has won yet because you must win the tiebreak by at least 2 points. We also change ends of the court every 6 points. This keeps the playing conditions fair for both of us.

Let's say you win the next two points to reach 8 points while I stay at 6. That means you have won the tiebreak. This win gives you the final game you need to take the set. You have officially won the set with a score of 7-6.

The person who reaches 7 points first wins the tiebreak as long as they lead by 2.

How to

Step by step

  1. 1

    Reach 6 games all

A tiebreak only starts if the set is tied 6–6 in games.

  2. 2

Player who would serve next serves point 1

They serve one point from the deuce (right) side.

  3. 3

Serve switches and rotates every 2 points

The other player serves the next 2 points — first from the ad (left) side, then deuce. Then back the other way.

  4. 4

    Change ends every 6 points

Players swap sides after 6 points, 12 points, etc. — this keeps wind and sun fair.

  5. 5

First to 7, win by 2

7–5 wins. 7–6 doesn't — you keep playing until someone leads by 2.
