Quick answer
Most tennis matches are best of 3 sets — the first player to win 2 sets wins the match. Some Men's matches at the professional level use best of 5, where you need 3 sets to win. A set is won by reaching 6 games with a 2-game lead, or by winning a tiebreak at 6–6.

Here's how that plays out
Let's say you are playing a standard recreational match against a friend.
You win the first set with a score of 6–4. That means you are halfway to winning the match.
In the second set, you both play very well and reach a score of 6–6. That means you must now play a tiebreak to decide who wins the set.
Your friend wins that tiebreak. That means the score is now tied at one set each.
Because most matches are best of 3, you move into a final third set. That means the winner of this next set wins the entire match.
You win the third set 6–2. That means you have reached 6 games with at least a 2-game lead.
You have now won 2 sets to your friend's 1 set. That means you have officially won the match.
The first player to win two sets wins the match.
Step by step
- 1
Win games to win a set
First player to win 6 games wins the set — but you must win by 2. So 6–4 wins the set, 6–5 does not.
- 2
Play a tiebreak at 6–6
If the set reaches 6 games all, a tiebreak is played to decide the set. The set score is recorded as 7–6.
- 3
Win 2 sets (or 3) to take the match
Best of 3: first to 2 sets wins. Best of 5: first to 3 sets wins.
